What is the Orange Circle? launchpad-orange

The Orange Circle BrowseAloud helps people who may find it difficult to read text online, those who may have literacy problems, or those with learning disabilities such as dyslexia. It is also a beneficial tool for those for whom English is a second language.

Who is Browsealoud helpful to?

Browsealoud helps people with low literacy and reading skills, dyslexia, English as a second language and people with a mild visual impairment.

What does Browsealoud do?

Browsealoud reads the content of a webpage to the user in multiple languages, from a range of voices. It can read all types of content including mobile, text, tables, downloadable documents like pdfs (but not PDFs on mobile though) and alt text for images.

Browsealoud can also:

  • read text-to-speech with a choice of reading speeds and highlighters to enhance reading comprehension
  • translate web pages into 78 languages
  • speak translated text aloud in 35 languages.

How it works

The user need only click on the Browsealoud link that appears at the very top of every page. Doing this will make the Browsealoud toolbar appear. With this toolbar available, the user then moves their mouse to highlight the part of the page which they want Browsealoud to read out.

Other Browsealoud features

Browsealoud also has:

  • the ability for the user to save a chunk of audio onto an MP3 file and listen to it later
  • the ability to magnify and change the color of text and background
  • a screen mask which blocks on-screen clutter, allowing readers to focus on text being read
  • a web page ‘simplifier’ that removes ads and other distracting content for easier reading.
